Questions About Adobe Illustrator’s Smoothness?

By soft faq Posted in: Adobe

Since Illustrator is a vector program, does it do the same thing that Flash does when you draw lines? Does it round and even them for you? Is this an option you can turn on and off? And is there a way to make it more or less smooth (like a slider so you can make the smoothness the way you want it)? Thank you!

Yes it does if you draw freehand with the brush or pencil. But the majority of the vector work I do in Illustrator is done with the Pen Tool, which more or less negates the purpose for additional smoothing almost entirely. The pen tool is the best tool for drawing in Illustrator – it’s more accurate.
There are several ways of adding smoothing to a path – you can use Object > Path > Simplify – then you get some sliders to play with. There’s also a Smooth Tool for smoothing lines you’ve drawn. Also you can double click on the Brush or Pencil tool and increase the smoothing in the Tool Options with a slider.
In any case you can adjust the path’s curves and direction by adjusting the curve handles for the path. All lines in Illustrator are vectors, and are always editable – so if something’s off, only a simple tweak is required. Vector image editing is completely different from raster image editors like Photoshop.
